The Warrior Beat

Athletic director Ben Jay deserves credit for rearranging the athletic department's priority list.

With the academic center completed and renovations underway on the football locker room, the focus has shifted to two other departments that treat the student-athletes. Renovations will begin in January on the athletic trainers' room — think of it as an in-house clinic — and equipment room. While that start date is six months away, it is earlier than the initial projection of "whenever." The initial wish list included only expanding the training room. But with some tactful negotiations, the equipment room was allowed to piggyback the project.

On the other hand, if they're building sand volleyball courts on one side of Ching field, why do they need to build practice courts on the other? I don't know diddly about sand volleyball, but can't players practice on the game courts?

The construction of the  practice courts spells the end of one of UH's best little secrets: the outdoor basketball courts.

There is concern about offensive lineman Mike Milovale, who is on crutches after suffering a foot injury during off-season training. Milovale, who exited spring training as the No. 1 left tackle, also has practiced at guard. The Rainbow Warriors have not set a depth chart.

After every practice, a couple of players sit on what I always assumed was a bench. With the locker room renovations, the "bench" has been vacated. It turns out the bench is really art. (A tiny percentage of every state building needs to include what is termed "public art.")

It also turns out the artist — Bumpei Akaji — was a well-renowned sculptor. He was a member of the 442nd Regiment who studied at art academies in Florence and Milan. He also earned a master's degree at UH. He died in 2000.

I'm still puzzled about this sign. There's a problem with roller-skaters?

Or why this drain was built here:
