"Samurai Mike"

Mike Singletary

The Warrior Beat was wandering around the Manoa campus this morning, minding other people's business, and there was one of the greatest linebackers in football history — Mike Singletary.

OK, everybody sing along:

I'm Samurai Mike, I stop 'em cold

Part of the defense, big and bold

I've been jammin' for quite a while

Doin' what's right and settin' the style

Give me a chance I'll rock you good

Nobody messin' in my neighborhood

I didn't come here lookin' for trouble

I just came to do the Super Bowl Shuffle

* * * * *

Wide receiver Vasquez Haynes suffered a little "tweak" of his ankle. But X-rays were negative, and he said he should be good to go in a couple of days.

This is what each UH football locker will look like:

Singletary said he was meeting with a UH coach.

  10. iwonderwhytheyhateme:

    top X?

  11. rage777:

Where do they put their pads? If it is where the flimsy coat hanger is, then does that mean they can't sit down if they hang up their pads?

  12. PONO:

Glad to see that there improvements being made to the football program. Even though we are getting new lockers they don't look very functional. A seat in the locker?

  13. Naks8:

Lockers look good. Glad to see they are making progress

  14. A-House:

Wonder how much over time the contractor must put in to get work done by 7/31/2013? Rubble can be removed quickly, but its the "finish work" that takes time - perhaps each "locker" is being assembled elsewhere and will just be shipped in and fastened to the wall

Just like building a house, the "framing" can be done quickly, but the inside finish work is time consuming - but, on the other hand, there is a house being built in Maunawili Park that is taking a long time to complete the exterior work - roof and walls - the rafters have been up for at lest 2 weeks - maybe the general contractor messed up with the scheduling of the electrical and/or plumbing contractor.

yet, both can do work after the exterior walls and roof have been installed - just easier to drill holes through studs without exterior walls.

    ST:

any chance that Singletary is recruiting a UH coach for his team?

  16. downtown:

    st,
do you think we will see more of a pass attack this year?

Anyone recommend good eateries on the Garden Isle...I am ono for local kine grinds!

  19. papajoe2:

OK, here goes. I've posted something similar about this a year or 2 ago. Since we are and will be having a hard time securing an end of the year game with a "name" school, is it possible for UH to get a contract with BCS conferences for their 3rd place team to come to Hawaii and play the Rainbow Warriors in the last regular season game of the year? We could rotate conferences each year with whatever conference signs a contract with us. Flights from the west coast to Hawaii could be booked years in advance for the team and paid for by UH (since we pay for the MWC anyway). Hotel rooms likewise could be blocked off in advance. Imagine living on the mainland when the temperature starts to drop, and your favorite school has a game in Hawaii. Sure not a lot of fans from the mainland, normally could go on a week's notice (could be slightly more than a week's notice) but Hawaii fans will probably fill the Aloha Stadium anyway. Imagine having the SEC, Pac12, Big xx, etc., playing UH in early December. Maybe we would have to charge our fans a premium ticket price and guarantee a paycheck for the BCS team to NOT lose too much money. The game could also be shown on TV (negotiate a separate contract from the MWC if possible or even split with the MWC). This game may also help us build a stronger relationship with the MWC too.

  20. ai-eee-soos:

A while back, someone asked if their were any Asian coaches in D1A -
couldn't find any except at D1AA.

But, in the NFL, there's a "Jeff Imamura - Defensive Assistant - Linebackers,
    with the Vikes.

  21. papajoe2:

mo808, I don't know if they are open for lunch, but I love the Bull Shed (Kapaa) for dinner. They make their own bread to go with dinner and it is goooooood. Their prime rib is huge, tasty, and reasonable priced too. I haven't been there in a while but other items on their menu is good too and also reasonably priced.

  22. Brad:

    rage777:
They put their pads on the top of the locker, helmet either on the hook or the cubby hole next to the security box. the shoes either in the cubby hole or the bottom drawer under the seat and their workout clothes either hanging or folded in the drawer under the seat. Wait what am i saying college kids will throw their clothes in the drawer not fold them..haha

  23. 3-Prong:

Is that solid koa,....a veneer? Nice.

  24. WarriorNY:

I hope Mike's not in town to take one of our coaches....

  25. rage777:

    Thanks Brad,

I didn't know how tall the lockers were. I like the locks on the lockers, but can't everybody just see what numbers you are putting in and know your combo? Maybe they should use biometric locks instead. Or like my work, have rolling codes so the numbers aren't in the same place every time.

  26. Brad:

Made my travel plans for the UNLV game. It's been a long time(1995) since i've seen them play in Vegas. Sooooo excited!

  27. WarriorNY:

    boolakanaka,
Where are ya visiting from the Big Apple?

  28. A-House:

IN a summer camp, aka army reserve training at Vandenburg AFB in Cali, they brought in a expert lock smith who showed us how easy it is to open even the most secure lock - it was truly amazing what a shoe can do.

Our entire reserve units, 12 AF and 12 Army, became history after one certain officer from our Washington detachment testified in the Watergate hearings, he was one of four that were caught, that he belonged to a "censorship" unit which caused a stir in Congress - within 60 days, the DOD shut us down - idiot voluntarily gave this information which had nothing to do with their break in of the Democratic HQs.

  29. A-House:

Coach Singletary I do hope that you came to impart experience and knowledge to one UH defensive coach; not to recruit him away.

  30. LizKauai:

    Me likee the new lockers!!!
    Welcome, Samurai Mike!!!

  32. mo808:

    Mahalo Papajoe2!

  33. papajoe2:

Is Mr. Singeltary coaching? The last that I know about him, after his stint with the 49ers, was as a commentary.

  34. turfwar:

I agree with Papa Joe. The Bull Shed for dinner is a great place. Great steaks and right on the shoreline.

  35. Brad:

    papajoe2

I don't think the "name" schools or BCS conference teams want to come to Hawaii if they did not schedule an extra home game that season to get more revenue and take advantage of the Hawaii exemption. They would say it's a waste of money to travel all the way here and not get much in return as far as $$$ goes. I'm sure the players and fans want to come here but the university administration doesn't. Im sure if they are the third best team in a BCS conference they will play in a $1 million+ bowl game and don't want to get more injuries before that. I mean I would love to see a big name team come here in December but if won't happen anymore unless we will pay them $1 million+. UH should really focus on scheduling a game in September before conference play during that off week and just have one off week later in the season. They don't have to ask the NCAA to give us a week earlier in August.

  36. mo808:

    Mahalo, SteveM! :-)

  37. ai-eee-soos:

#33. Singletary is on the Vikings coaching staff.

  49. Kevin:

UH athletics needs to employ more use of the student body at UH Manoa.

As a small shareholder of WWE, Inc. and a UH athletics supporter I am seeing more and more contrasts between the two. Just today, WWE unveiled their $2.3 million “Performance Center”. Includes full facilities for weightroom and conditioning, 7 full sized 20’x20’ wrestling rings, a media center for talent to develop their speaking skills and character, and sports medicine facility, and classes on financial management.

The facility in Orlando, FL will have 100 employees of part time and full time capacity including on-call and on-site medical staff. Here’s the kicker.. WWE’s developmental program runs a regional television show called “NXT” where their young male and female performers get to display their abilities and characters in full force as if they were on weekly nationally and globally televised WWE programming complete with a live audience. The WWE developed a working relationship with Full Sail University, a award-winning school for media and entertainment broadcasting. So guess who is editing and helping produce the NXT television shows?? THE STUDENTS. It’s a tremendous working relationship between the WWE and the university and as part of this relationship, the WWE has awarded several scholarships to Full Sail University students: http://corporate.wwe.com/news/2013/WWECorporate-.jsp

While several interns, as I am told, have helped produced some of the “H-TV” videos on the Hawaii Athletics site, UH athletics needs to dig deeper to the students of UH to assist with media and marketing. If athletics is handcuffed by budget in these areas, there are young minds at upper campus that know what modern-day media and marketing is all about.

    Other universities do it.

Let the speculation begin. New UH linebacker coach?

  56. Tolkien Warrior:

Dat Nguyen. He was player and coach at Dallas and Texas A&M. Might be out of coaching at the moment tho.

Timmy Chang. Was a GA at SMU in 2012. Might still be.
And speaking of SMU, Wes Suan is RB coach. Isn't this gent Asian?

  57. ai-eee-soos:

Stutz I, WR coach at Weber State.

  58. PurpleMaple:

Coach Chow announced earlier that he is opening up the offense. Some kind of hybrid-spread that he and new Offensive Coordinator, Aaron Price, will work on. That's why the loss of Trevor Davis looms significant. Well, until any of the incoming WRs can step up. But for now, depth at WR is thin. I'm talking game-experienced receivers.

Loving the new lockers!!!!! Having the seats

  61. soljah808:

Love the lockers!!! Having the seats in the lockers gives more leg and walking room . I . Also the lockers dont even look like the ones from the rendering but that is a good thing because the others looked like some kind of cubicle. Cant wait for the end result!

"Earning the right to be GREAT..." - Gary Beemer.

    What an idea.

  63. papajoe2:

#35 Brad~ Yes, maybe the team administrators themselves would not like to come to Hawaii because of the headache to do so, that's why I stated that we sign a contract with the conference and not individual teams. If they finish 3rd, then they would have to come here if their conference agrees beforehand to send its 3rd place team. If the team needs to win to their last game to get here, I'm sure it will promote a lot of interest within the league and the teams themselves. If they lose then the next team, who may also have to win their final game, takes their place. In reality, I don't think they are thinking about injuries by playing a football game (maybe teams decimated by injuries would, but then, if that is how their season is going, they probably wouldn't be in 3rd place). They will probably make up any $$ losses incurred in the Hawaii game, if any, by playing in a bowl game later on in the winter, but do I think Hawaii would have to pay out some bucks for any team to get here. Adding a premium price on ticket sales for their fans will also help them out financially. We are already paying all the teams in the MWC travel substities, why not pay a marquee team the same. I mentioned flights from the West coast because it would be easier making long term reservations, but most of the BCS conference teams charter their flights, which we could pay a set amount for. Being a road game, I'm not sure, but I think they will be limited in the number of players suited up so no need to charter 3, 4, 5 planes at our expense. If only 2 conferences agree, then they could rotate, every other year. More conferences, the longer they wait for their reward to come to Hawaii. I am just thinking "outside the box" as I really enjoyed the many years that Hawaii played a "marquee" team on the last game of the season. With all the conference playoffs on the last week, playing a marquee team in December will almost be impossible. Besides, what will the rest of the teams in the conference be doing?

  66. Buffoman:

#77 Papa 2, I would try to see if another conference other than the closest neighbor (Pac 12) may have an interest in the concept, but I would not wave the incentive of UH paying their way over (if needed, negotiate after). If the conference likes the idea of the 13th game, and the competitive nature of the 3rd place participant "needing prove bowl worthiness" it would be in their best interest to play.

Those conferences already are in place to make a ton of dollars when post season major bowls roll along, so they can afford to subsidize their 3rd place team to possibly make more money when bowl selection rolls along.

It is out of the box. Good for you.
