On the clock

August 19th, 2013
By

The Rainbow Warriors had an abbreviated practice on Sunday, followed by a tour of military airplanes. After that, a beach day was planned. But a couple of the players asked to return to the barracks to sleep. The coaches then polled the players to see how many wanted to go to the beach. Only five hands were raised. And that's what happens when there are 18 practices in 17 days of camp.

* * * * *

The Warriors practice at 2 p.m. today and 11 a.m. tomorrow.

Then they check out of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam tomorrow afternoon, after which they will move into dormitories or off-campus housing.

There is no practice on Wednesday.

On Thursday, they settle into the schedule of 7 a.m. daily practices leading to the Aug. 29 opener against USC.

* * * * *

Several ailing Warriors are expected to resume practice this week, including offensive tackle Sean Shigematsu, running backs Faga Wily, Steven Lakalaka and Diocemy Saint Juste, and, perhaps, tight end Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson.

    Heal up, guys.

ST ~ Will practices at UH be closed?

    GO BOWS!!!

  8. kifi:

Healing thoughts for all Rainbows. Hoping that big Sean will follow in the footsteps of his dad Delroy, who was the starting right tackle for UNLV back in '78-'80.

Delroy took over at right tackle from former Waianae great Hansel Kane, who himself was a three year starter.

    Morning..

How is Iosefa doing? Does he seem like he'll be at least practicing with the squad before game day?

  14. kifi:

Reading Aofaga Wily's name brings back memories of Faga's uncle Sekeli. Sekeli was a great football player himself at Kahku in the early eighties. Sekeli I believe was one of the founding fathers of the Hawaii Big Boy league, which has exploded across the state and is now just as popular as the Pop Warner leagues. Aofaga's Uncle Taylor took over the league after Uncle Sekeli's passing in 2008.

  15. kifi:

#12 - will they chase us away if we try to watch practice from the other side of the fence?

  16. boolakanaka:

14--Thanks for the history lessons--we often neglect and fail to recognize all the folks who came before the current crop. At the very least, it shows that we have a long and robust history of great players and mentors. On a related note, I hope we re-open that UCLA and for that matter Pac-12 pipeline of transfers which was rather abundant in the 70s and 80s.

It's hard to say whether they'll hold him out or not. He's coming along nicely.

My UCLA friends were happy that Castro went to Hawaii and not USC. The say he is a BEAST on the field. We ate lucky to have him.

I have to say this...this is the first time ever I have seen UH flags flying in Manhattan and Hermosa Beach neighborhoods at homes. Usually we have a bazillion USC flags. Now I need flags for our neighbors. Even my neighbor who is a celebrity with the younger crowd noticed it to. His new car...Warrior green. He misses not seeing the big boy around the neighborhood.

We also have not gotten our tickets. Is there a specific person to call? We leave this week and hope we don't get the tickets crossed in the mail. WTH?

  36. haka:

    PolyMom
I think you can still get your tickets at the Aloha Stadium boxoffice with an ID if you lose or forget them...or if you don't get them, but you may want to confirm that. I think they just void the original barcode and give you new tickets.

  43. Stephen Tsai:

What will be interesting in the very near future is the reluctance of promoting "Rainbows." The conflict might be coming from the school itself. The primary goal is to promote and protect the "H" brand.

  44. Stephen Tsai:

It's interesting that when June Jones is blamed for the change in nicknames, UH officials remain really quiet.
The big deal wasn't dropping the "Rainbow" nickname 14 years ago, it was creating the "H" logo. That spawned a lot in new sales. We can argue about whether the athletic department and the football program get their fair share from the H, but UH has benefitted. And while nobody will publicly praise JJ, they know he did good.

  45. wafan:

    #43 . . .

    Confusion at UH?

    What else is new?

  46. al:

    he did did good.

  47. boolakanaka:

44-ST---Yes, it the sweet and sour shame of college sports. In the last 20 years, corporations have offered such money so they can profit from the glory of college athletes, and the universities grab at these potential financial windfalls. Case in point, in 2010, despite a faltering national economy, a single college athletic league, the football-crazed Southeastern Conference (SEC), became the first to crack the billion-dollar barrier in athletic receipts. The Big Ten pursued closely at $905 million. That money comes from a combination of ticket sales, concession sales, merchandise, licensing fees, and other sources—but the great bulk of it comes from television contracts--so, yes UH is also a complicit and willing player in trying to market and monetize itself.

  49. bowwar:

June Junes tried to establish a new tradition of winning and exciting football..With that, June tried to change the "image" of the program through better marketing and branding. The Warriors designation was no fluke and something supported by marketing firms advising the UH. The "H" logo was something that even Fred von Appen has recommended based on feedback from his players...

June was successful in establishing the University with a new logo, new look, and a wining tradition. No one took UH for granted if were going to play them under JJ. June also brought to the University an "exciting" brand of football where we could score from anywhere and keep the fan interest...

Yes, there is no doubt in my mind that JJ should be "lauded" for what he did for the University and its football program...

The only "downside" to JJ's reign was "how" he left UH...which may have left a bitter taste in many "die hard" Warrior fans. Of course, some of that blame should be placed on UH administrators (i.e. Frazier, etc.) and our Governor (i.e. Lingle) for not supporting the program and giving JJ the new contract he deserved.

  50. Not an Expert:

People's pride and ego sometimes are too entrenched that they cannot look at what is best and what will work. Why because it was not their idea or they have jealousy towards that someone who may just be a person that has that it factor. If all involved was to say let's brainstorm on what we can do for the benefit of UH athletic program to get into the PAC-12 and put aside all their egos it may just come to pass.

Egos may have gotten UH into the MWC but at a awful financial price. Those 2 who took all the credit has now somehow disappeared knowing the financial agreements sucks.

  51. Anonymous Former UH Women's Volleyball Player:

June Jones? You mean my baby daddy?

  52. boolakanaka:

49--The JJ situation, and I should readily admit that I viewed this from afar, but it had many of the elements that many larger programs, but moreover universities are currently trying to address; successful athletics that become at once profitable and at odds with the hierarchy, and probably the hurt ego, of the provost office. Now with the JJ situation you had the conflation of both his own raise but also the necessary upgrades of both facilities and staff (salaries).

This follows both the directives and theme of the knight commission, that is to say, the University attempting to balance the ratio of expenditures on athletics and and how they relate to academics. From afar, it seems like while JJ demands and wants were reasonable, there were probably larger institutional issues at hand, none in the least, is a coach who was bigger than the university president and governor, at least in the eyes of citizenry. So, no doubt, there was castration of his power in play, but also an attempt by the university to redefine itself and its academic mission.

Len Elmore, a former college and professional athlete, lawyer, and knight commission member who is the chief executive of iHoops, the NCAA's youth-basketball program, said the knight commission aimed to emphasize the "bright line" between college and professional sports. "We're not saying there cannot be an investment in sports," Mr. Elmore said. "We're saying that investment must be put in perspective." At the end of the day, and again, just my two cents, UH was tired of JJ having way too much juice relative to the rest of the university.

  53. Independent Thinker:

How is Higgins coming along, ST?

Haven't read any reports on his progress relative to the other two practice-time QBs.

I still say Higgins is a better game-time QB than the other two. Disagree, chow? Let Higgins play one entire game then and let's see.

I say the other two QBs are better practice-time QBs, but Higgins is a better game-time QB. Sort of like how some coaches are better at being an assistant coach and not necessarily a good head coach.

I can see why a lifetime assistant coach -- who was "unfairly" overlooked by the major programs for being "brutally honest" about the chances for success under him because of rebuilding, should he take over their programs -- would feel a kinship with QBs from these major programs who were similarly "overlooked" by these major programs. Similarity breeds liking, I am told.

Makes sense. Doesn't sit well with me, but it makes sense.

Tell me Higgins is still in the mix, ST. Last few reports only mention the two practice-time QBs and their progress at practice.

Am interested in winning. Want to see UH win. Have my own thoughts on what it will take to win. Might not mesh with what you might think it will take to win. That's ok.

Have been consistent all along in my position re: Higgins being the better game-time QB. Have never changed from this position. Still feel that way now, given all that is to be considered in reaching such a conclusion.

Was with me through thick and thin, good and bad, for better or for worst !

Can't say enough for her kindness especially when I cried in front of her when I miss an assignment because of sitting on that bench my final year watching my whole basketball career come to an end as Coach Larry Little would not play me. Dr Curtis got up from her chair consoled me and told me "it's going to be alright" as she gave me to the weekend to get it done and have it ready for Tuesday class.

I did just that the assignment over the weekend, turned it in on Tuesday and I earned a B on the paper. I passed her class which was real tough as Dr. Curtis would not grade on the curve. Last time I saw her she was at the Stan Sheriff Center in 2006 when I received the Kane Fernandez community service award from the LWC as she came over with Hawaii Tea leaves for me and a beautiful lei for my wife as once again I cried on her shoulders as I did 32 years ago.
