Gabriel is honorary captain

Garrett Gabriel, who led the Rainbow Warriors to two victories over BYU — including the night BYU's Ty Detmer won the Heisman Trophy — is the honorary captain this week.

Gabriel spoke to the team at the end of today's practice.

Gabriel and his wife have three sons. He now works for the Department of Education.

Defensive end Beau Yap is expected to be medically cleared to play in Saturday's game against 25th-ranked Fresno State.

Yap displayed mild concussion-like symptoms after he was struck on the helmet against Nevada this past Saturday. Knowing that Yap wanted to re-enter, the athletic trainers and equipment staff collaborated on the stop: They took away Yap's helmet.

Yap said he will be ready for the game.

For the few who still have not seen it, check out this video on Fresno State's Derek Carr: Video.

The Warriors have played up to beat Fresno several times before.

Maximus: You ask me what I want. I, too, want to stand before the Emperor as you did.
Proximo: Then listen to me. Learn from me. I wasn't the best because I killed quickly. I was the best because the crowd loved me. Win the crowd, and you will win your freedom.
Maximus: I will win the crowd. I will give them something they have never seen before.

Is something wrong with our helmets? Or are the trainers much more cognizant of concussion symptoms now than ever? Or both? Or what?

  36. boolakanaka:

Aloha kakou! 3-prong, as for Larry Ellison, we might be, and this is in all due respect to the State, a little too small a venue for his level of business interest. First, he is already involved in a very small group, of uber high asset individuals, who are working behind the scent to bring back a NFL franchise to Los Angeles, and so his quota on football might be currently filled. Next, and possibly more important, is that although he has been a benevolent landlord (at least some would say) on Lana'i, he is at the end of the day, a businessman. Thus, unless he identifies a legitimate and pragmatic way to monetize Warrior football, this would be a non-starter from his side.

Although, I work in mgmt. consulting, I have not seen enough of the business model, and as well, its obligations from both the state, the stadium, and its media contracts to make any precursory determinations of whether their current practices are solvent, and/or has the ability to be sustainable. In other words, it would be nice, but unless it can actually provide a ROI (return on investment) the safe money says he passes.....

  37. Sasa Muli:

  47. Former UH Athlete:

I got St Louis (+3.5) tonight.

The dome is going to be loud and 49ers have issues. No Aldon Smith, Vernon Davis is still questionable. Without Davis, the WRs are going to get smothered again. St Louis has a quality defense and played the 49ers very tough last year in both games.

As much as I like Kaepernick, his Oline isn't playing as well as last year. In the losses, he's been scrambling much more than before, but has nobody to throw to. Defenses have a spy on him so his scramble yards are being limited, but the bigger issue is the WRs can't get open.

Players transferring is one of the bad breaks hurting us. Our best left tackle and pass protector with real pro style size and athleticism Muir transferring to Baylor, our best receiver out of Spring practice Davis transferring to Cal. And one of our best running backs from 2012 in Gregory leaving the team-- those hurt us badly. Injuries hurt even more.

  58. boolakanaka:

Some side info on former warrior...." Philadelphia Eagles practice squad news, earlier signed wide receiver Will Murphy and in the process released offensive lineman Isaac Remington.

Murphy was a part of the Eagles’ final cuts on August 31st but there is an obvious desperate need at the wide receiver position. With the addition of Murphy to the practice squad, the Eagles now have two wide receivers on there including Greg Salas. Personally, I think Greg Salas should be on the 53-man roster instead of Jeff Maehl but that’s up to Chip Kelly and the front office.

Murphy went to the University of Oregon and only played three seasons there initially joining the team as a walk-on. At Oregon, he would only have 240 receiving yards and one touchdown."

One would think, that Salas gets a bump up to the active roster....

  59. markazulu:

Kind've wondered how come Norm chow doesnt incorporate the shovel pass

    UHfan808.

    First off. Happy Birthday/

Second. You asked what's an (OT) Original Tsaiko. I used that term as a play off of {OG}Original Gangster, which by the way is usually taken as a positive. The context I used it was to describe founding members of the blog who have remained regular posters.

To explain OG and OT in local talk....OGs and OTs don't aack. They are who they say they are they don't misrep themselves.

  61. jeezy33:

    59. I think many people wonder that as well as bubble screens, hitches, etc. Kaumeyer was on the Bobby Curran show this morning explaining how Fresno does a great job protecting Carr by using screens, shovel passes, and 5 yard hitches as effective ways to get the ball out of his hand quickly. Those quick passes act like run plays. Him saying that makes me wonder why we don't do it too to protect our QB and act as running plays to keep the ball moving forward.

No point trying to figure out why we don't do certain things though.

P.S. At the Hawaii Bowl last year, we saw Margus Hunt destroy Derek Carr. Too bad we don't have a player like that to cause that kind of havoc. Fresno just couldn't do anything against SMU that day, one of the more shocking games I saw all year.

  85. Independent Thinker:

On the issue of calling someone a troll...

I have come to understand that when someone disagrees with your position and they cannot come up with an argument that trumps your argument, these types of people and personalities resort to calling the opponent names like troll, disagreeable, etc. It's a sign of weakness, people. Calling someone a troll is weak, at best. Weak retort; weak argument; weak rebuttal; weak ability to formulate a powerful argument for your position.

Labels of that sort mean nothing to me or to many others who lurk and who do not speak up. I am not interested in a popularity contest. If I were, I'd run for office.

I reserve the right to demand that my school do a better job. End of story.

  95. primo123:

    #94

I was wondering where he went......MIA

  96. boolakanaka:

75...that was a great little insight from the SMU side....I love this one post: I think June desperately wants to leave SMU. Unfortunately, his record hasn’t merited someone giving him a job that pays him better. I am sure he blames SMU for his problems, though SMU fans can certainly list a few reasons why June has only himself to blame.

SMU has 3 options after the season. It can extend June; it can terminate June; or it can see the contract through to the end. Let’s table the last option for a moment because for the reasons above, it really is not a good option.

If SMU elects to terminate June, from the outside looking in, it will appear to be insane. I am big on reasonableness. Firing June will look unreasonable. To an outsider, SMU wandered the college football wilderness until June took over. All June did was go to 4 straight bowls, winning 3 of them. One sub-.500 season after 4 bowls does not merit termination at SMU to an outsider.

Now, I can list the myriad of reasons terminating June is absolutely the right thing to do, if not overdue. He doesn’t want to be here; he doesn’t recruit; the team has plateaued; he doesn’t really do anything to sell the program; he once managed to personally sabotage his own recruiting class in an unprecedented way. Frankly, I think there was enough on the ASU debacle to fire the man with cause, but too much time has passed.

Unfortunately, good reasons to fire June don’t really matter. Like it or not, SMU is not a plum job. It isn’t a bad job. It is just a job. We can list 100 reasons why SMU is a great job, but the truth is so can almost any school, and make no mistake, SMU has warts as well. And since we are not one of the top 25% of college jobs out there, it is important that SMU, at all times, appears to be REASONABLE (there is that word again).

Why is being reasonable important? Because we have to show a coach that SMU is supportive and will give the next coach time to put his system in place and recruit his players. SMU isn’t a good enough school to demand a coach’s head after 1 losing season. I always think of Southern Miss who fired Jeff Bower after 9 straight winning seasons, then hired Larry Fedora (who left after 5 years for UNC) and then fired the next guy after a single season-as an outsider I view So. Miss. as a bunch of friggin’ nuts with unreasonable expectations.

Given that he is owed 2 million, and obviously can't be fired for cause, although SMU has some high net benefactors, I don't see them pulling the trigger on a termination, as the more pressing problem is who can they attract, like him or not, he has set the bar high for the next guy.

    NorthShoreFan,

First of all, howzit! Long time no blog. Hope all is well!

It appears our pass defense has been exposed many times in the past couple games. Frseno is no longer the Pat Hill "run 'till ur done" offense. If it were, I'd say we could make this an interesting ball game. Our run defense is quite good.

With Fresno throwing the ball all over the damn creation, it's going to take a performance we haven't seen yet to slow them down.

  102. Marleysdad:

#73, Maybe Kennedy can be our Margus.....although not as tall.

#90, My Daughter played tball with Garrett's son last season & we play their team Saturday morning.

  103. madeinhawaii:

    ST:

Is that "stop" or "spot" ? Eh, the first kind of makes sense, too...

equipment staff collaborated on the stop

  104. Manoa Mist:

All-time favorite UH player: Garrett Gabriel. The QB who finally beat BYU after 10 years of losing.

  105. Former UH Athlete:

83... I think UH gets more than 21 barring a massive amount of turnovers. Fresno's defense is as bad as their offense is good. Offense will have chances.

Fresno is ranked 91st vs the run
Fresno is ranked 119th vs the pass

And it's not like they've played elite offenses. Rutgers hasn't come close to replicating their production vs Fresno and Boise St's offense got shut down vs a mediocre Washington defense (their other quality opponent so far) The Baltazar kid is going to be really good once he's the guy.

    --

Defending Fresno is a tough task...

Fresno is top 5 in fewest sacks allowed. Just makes the Dline more important as they must look to deflect passes.

Fresno loves the quick pass game, and Carr often throws the ball under 2 seconds. That's why they allow so few sacks. Kaumeyer going to have to use a nickel, either (4-2-5) or (3-3-5), alignment to get extra speed on the field to defend that. UH does have the depth in the secondary to pull this off.

I think UH can stack the line (show blitz w/ cover 1 or 0) and decoy the blitz and try to trap Carr into a bad read and maybe a cheap interception knowing that he wants to throw quick on most plays. Zone blitzes could be effective vs quick passes/screens as college QBs often don't read/react well to DEs dropping into coverage. On screen plays, OL blocking assignments get messed up vs zone blitz. Basically, do anything to keep Carr off balance on his reads.

I like how Boise tried to defend Fresno... only rush 3 or 4 and try to keep everything short. I thought Boise played too conservatively and their DLine never threatened Carr and he had a bunch of time to wait for receivers to find a soft spot if he didn't throw quick.

It's all good in theory, but they still have to play the game. If UH has any chance, the defense needs to make Fresno earn every yard and force some turnovers. Plus, it's paramount that the offense to have long grinding drives to make the game as short as possible.

UH defense will definitely have their hands full on Saturday. Need to force turnovers, WRs tend to be loose with the ball, so hopefully UH tries to rip at the ball.

  106. primo123:

    #105

so you leaning UH +18.5 eh?

  107. mo808:

Awesome News! Glad to see Gabriel honored!

  108. primo123:

    Gabriel had Swag!

  109. Former UH Athlete:

Like a lot of RnS, or Air Raid, the deep ball is set up by the short stuff. I'm sure Fresno will take deep shots if Kaumeyer plays too aggressive. Forcing Fresno to dink and dunk seems to make the most sense for me if I were a coach, but a coach I am not.

  110. Former UH Athlete:

106.. not likely... I thought the line would have opened over 20.

I'll only put money on UH if the line gets to 21. At this point doesn't look like it'll get there. I'm no expert, but the odds makers must have the line this low for a reason...

  111. Sasa Muli:

Sasa says, if no poke squid long time, man like talk talk talk to people he cannot see.

  112. Former UH Athlete:

Will be rooting for UH all the way though. The offense get chance to look better as Fresno's D is really bad, but the OLine needs to show me something.

    --

    ST:
Any word on the QB situation?

  113. cocobean:

Two thumbs up for Garrett. A well deserved honor. I'll stand and cheer when he's introduced. He deserves a standing O from everyone in the house. Glad Chow doesn't hold any grudges for the spankings GG administered to the Cougars.

  114. Former UH Athlete:

primo123... Oddsmakers probably not loving Fresno St as they are 0-3 ATS this year. That and Saturday is Fresno's 1st road game probably explain the line (in addition to their defense).

Amazingly, Fresno has been outgained on offense in every game this year.

  115. 808bowler:

    morning everyone,
watched the Nevada again and after watching Sean didn't do that bad. the int was good plays by the dl and the other one Sean got hit as he was to throw it. want able to put anything on it. but if u looked at another angle the wr he was throwing too was wide open. so seems like was making the right reads.

  116. Derek:

For some reason, our opponents tend to get well against Hawaii. Doesn't matter if it's at home or on the road. Why? Because the other teams can score and we can't, simple. If we could score 24-30 points per game we would win a lot of games. Our defense is good enough.

  117. jeezy33:

FUHA, based on your observation, the over might be looking good... I am not convinced yet that Hawaii can score against a bad defense though...

But there is a stat out that Hawaii is 20th in the country in fastest pace per play. Fresno is 6th. So if that many plays are being run a game, it could equate to a bunch of points.

  118. Former UH Athlete:

jeezy, UH is 20th in pace per play? Whodda thunk that?

58.5 is the consensus total... over might be the way to play.

If the UH offense can show improvement and Fresno's D is a bad as advertised, UH can score... Good for the over. Should UH shoot themselves in the foot with turnovers, that will gas out the defense and Fresno may have a monster 2nd half... also good for the over.

I think I'm liking the over also... good call jeezy

Now watch both teams play sloppy, 8 combined turnovers, 3 missed FGs and it turns into a low scoring grinder and UH plays to another under. LOL

  119. papajoe2:

#115 808bowler~ Remember SS had at least 3 balls batted down at the line of scrimmage. He still takes too long to release the ball (the one he got sacked, and you say the receiver was open) and zones in on his receivers too long too. I don't see too much improvement in him from last year except he seems to be real confident. He may be the best of the rest though and I support whoever coach Chow decides to use and will ALWAYS root for our Rainbow Warriors. Go Bows!

  120. jeezy33:

Hawaii averages 21 seconds per play. Fresno 19.8. The closer the game, the higher the chance of over in my eyes. If Fresno is up 28 at half, they will do what they did last year. But if Fresno D gives up big plays, I could see Hawaii putting up points considering we do have deep threat guys.

Last game of the day so I'll wait on that one.

  121. NotNasti:

If we can get two long td runs by St. Juste and a establish a controlling rushing game, we get chance, because then their secondary will soften up. All we need is a chance. And hope. Our boys are going out there to try and win on Saturday, the least we can do is root for them.

  122. Inyoface:

Our running is better than our passing, who would've thunk?

  123. Andrew:

I would love to see UH spoil Fresno State's BCS hopes. Hopefully they get caught looking too far ahead and get surprised by Hawaii. Anything can happen , especially when it's a home game. This could be like what UH went through in the '07 season. They were favored in both the San Jose St. and Louisiana Tech games and both turned out to be "down to the last play" finishes.

  124. primo123:

fresno's defense never saw anything like Hawaii's offense.

  125. jeezy33:

    121. Corner play in my opinion is still Hawaii's weakness on D. I've been consistent with that going in to the year even though they have played decent so far. Its going to be tough matching up with all the Fresno WRs. Quezada is average at best running the ball so they shouldnt get much on the ground. We need to hope Fresno comes out flat and establishing the run will be our only chance to win this game in my eyes. Then like you mentioned, we can take advantage of Fresno DBs deep.

Fresno is going to score though. Hawaii will have to find a way to create turnovers and convert into TDs... Hope to see Woolsey get a shot. He can sling it deep and run

  126. NotNasti:

At this point, Fresno is thinking that they are going to run the table, and looking at who they have left who can blame them? Hopefully, they will overlook UH this week. Would playing in a rainstorm affect their passing game? How about encouraging them to swim in box jellyfish infested waters? Anything?

  127. Andrew:

    121 & 125

I agree establishing the run to set up the passing game is key. Also creating turnovers to not only help out the offense but to deflate Fresno's momentum and offensive rythym . I like Woolsey as well but very worried about his lack of reps with the offense.

  128. jeezy33:

@Wyoming is going to be tough.... I think Boise can win in a re match..

  129. Former UH Athlete:

Yup, Fresno's 2013 schedule makes the 2007 Hawaii schedule look like a gauntlet. Fresno is going to get reamed by the media once the regular season is over and Fresno wins out.

5 to 1 odds that Mark May or Trevor Matich makes a highly negative comparison to the 2007 Hawaii team.

    --

As much as I can't stand Fresno, UH needs Fresno to make a BCS game so UH can cash the BCS bowl revenue sharing check.

  130. jeezy33:

127... Not too worried about lack of reps. We already know what we have if SS starts. A lot of dinking and dunking and eventual INT on long ball. Woolsey at least gives us a play making element. You can give him simple throws to start out... Boot leg would be good too because he can run pretty well giving him another option if no one is open...

Risk is worth reward I think.

  133. Former UH Athlete:

Check that... make that 3/2 odds that Mark May or Trevor Matich makes a highly negative comparison to the 2007 Hawaii team.

5 to 1 is way too high.

  134. Andrew:

    #129

As much as UH needs the money, I think beating Fresno would benefit them much more.

  135. NotNasti:

FUHA, 100% agree that the comparison to UH 2007 will be made if Fresno run's the table, especially if a few of the wins are squeakers.

Jeezy, no guarantee that BSU will win their division to make it to the MWC championship game.

  136. cocobean:

#128. Wyoming is a tough place to play. Fresno and Boise both have to play in Laramie. Boise could very well beat Fresno IF they meet again in the championship game.

Who's to say the champ game won't be UH v Wyoming? Neither team is mathmatically eliminated from winning their division.

  137. diehard797:

What is going on with Penitito Fa'alologo? Putting him him will solve the running game. It will take 3-4 guys to bring the BEAST down!

  147. Andrew:

Hopefully the attedance for Saturday is decent. Doesn't look good but Fresno games usually draw pretty well. In my opinion I think the athletic department should also look into offering the student athletic fee on volunteer basis for students from other UH campuses (i.e CC schools and West Oahu). It would be a good way to bring in more students and to possibly make some extra income as well.

  148. SailorBlue:

Aloha everybody ~ just a reminder that this Saturday's tailgater is again at Rainbow Bay Marina Cabana 'A'. Gabriel, good choice.

  151. cocobean:

The trouble with the O hasn't been the play calling it's been the execution of the called play. In my eyes our offense has been playing better defense on itself than the opponent's D. Our mental errors combined with phyical mistakes have been the biggest facors in keeping us off the score board. I truly believe this is the game the offense comes together to support the efforts of the defense and special teams.

  154. Manoa2:

On paper, Fresno wins. But dig deeper and there are opportunities for Hawaii if it can get its offense to produce a few good plays and for a change, some big plays like Nevada laid on us.
On the field as opposed to paper, things like turnovers come into play and if our defense is stingy and we win the turnover battle, we hand the game to the offense to win for us-- a breakaway by St. Juste, or another long pass to Gant or a pass to Clark our TE that catches Fresno napping.

  155. jimmy the lock:

Pardon me while I step on the broken record...

  162. NotNasti:

Sasa, have some pride . . . and class. You're better than what you are portraying. Or reveal yourself. Maybe too fafa to do that? At least with the spam it was unintelligible. You're vulgar.

  163. madeinhawaii:

If Graham is back, and practices more than a day, I would expect the Offense to show incremental improvement. But for them to suddenly connect on all phases of their game play, I don't think that's a reasonable expectation. If we're going in with one of our other Qbacks? No real improvement. Some different looks with different results, perhaps but more predictability after the 1st quarter. 3 guys suffered concussions, and I've only heard that one is cleared to play? Dline is losing depth? Not good against Fresno.

I think our boys play their hearts out but Fresno comes out on top.

  172. Whats up:

The comparison of the Norm Chow taking over Hawaii and Tim Deruyter taking over Fresno with immediate success is ridiculous. There is no comparison Deruyter inherited Derrick Carr and a roster full of legit D1 talent from Pat Hill. While Chow did not inherit the same legit D1 or superstar QB talent on the roster from McMackin.

So lets be honest Deruyter should be kissing Pat Hill okole for passing of superstar QB Derrick Carr with great WR's, plus the rest of the loaded roster, period! While Norm Chow should be kicking McMackin okole for passing on a roster that only had a thin select few that where legit D1 players and no Superstar QB with the bloodlines like a Derrick Carr. Chow has to recruit to get the talent level up to legit D1 status and Derutyer did not.

We all know the QB position is the most important position on the team. And Deruyter inherited Superstar QB Derrick Carr from Pat Hill and Norm Chow inherited not a Superstar QB from McMackin. And that my friends is the biggest reason why Hawaii didn't have the same success as Fresno.

  180. jonj:

I dont understand how people think were gonna have better offensive production when the guy who been given most the reps since spring is out and our coaches have not proven they can adapt the offense around the personnel that we have.

im betting 95% chance schoeder starts. ikaika comes in mid 3rd. while the best of the bunch Higgins (not athletically, but mentally and pocket presence) sits on the bench. higgins was the only one who could get the ball out quickly which gave the Wrs some space to run.

    MY prediction 42-13.

#173 Mack played fresno With a Rs Soph DG who had his First start. while playing a Derek Carr who had started all season. We had how starters go down with injuries right about then??

So please stop with the Mack bashing already cuz weve always played Fresno tough with Mack. And i can tell you now its gonna be a bad night for us! probably lose another 1000 or so fans for the next game.

  184. madeinhawaii:

    cocobean,

If freshman don't count, then we needed more JuCo transfers. That's a recruiting issue. But don't we have a couple of true freshman contributing on both ends of the ball? According to some, we still don't have enough talent by some. I disagree. I think we have enough talent. Enough talent to have won against Nevada or at least put up a much better fight. We have enough talent to show marked improvement on Offense, just as the team has demonstrated improvement on Defense. It's the coaches jobs to figure out why the output hasn't matched the talent pool.

  185. jonj:

and what 9 of 11 starters are MAcks recruits aswell?!? No legit D1 talent?? when the only bright spot is our Defense??

  186. cocobean:

Made...didn't say frosh don't count. Said you can't count on them to be of immediate help. Juco's are hit or miss. While they may be older they have zero D1 experience.

Experience, D1 game experience is the best teacher. Take Fresno's starting Offense and count the total number of starts they have as a unit. Do the same for UH. I bet they'll be a big difference in Fresno's favor. It takes time for talent to reach it's full potential.

    cocobean,

I agree. Even underclassmen are hit and miss, with injuries, academics, ego and personality in the mix along with their talent. If the team doesn't start to show marked signs of improvement, it's going to get much harder to land quality recruits. The Pro style is a big risk for UH as it is not only more complex and difficult to master, it requires a higher level of gifted athletes on the line. Only a third of the Division 1 schools run the Pro Style, the vast majority are BCS teams. We can only cross our fingers and hope.
