This Spud's for you

October 3rd, 2013

Don "Spud" Botelho is proof that anything is possible in football.

He was a quarterback, running back, punter and kicker on a UH team that upset Nebraska, 6-0, in Lincoln in 1955.

When the UH football program went on hiatus, he helped bring it back, in 1961.

Botelho was head coach of the Pac-Five teams that won two Oahu Prep Bowl titles in the 1980s. His former players included Joe Onosai, Pio Sagapolutele, Leroy Lutu, Garrett Gabriel and Salevaa Atisanoe (who became sumo wrestler Konishiki).

Botelho will be UH's honorary captain for Saturday's game against San Jose State.
