The Warrior Beat

Room available

February 7th, 2014

The Rainbow Warriors have enough flexibility to add another player or two to this year's recruiting class.

What's more, by the end of this spring semester there should be enough room to award a scholarship to a player — or two — who has been a walk-on for at least two years.

Among the deserving candidates are Josh Donovan, Jason Muraoka, Damien Packer, Mike Martin, Hunter Thomson and Brenden Urban. I'm not sure if Niko Uti and Nick Childs have logged enough time in the program to earn a scholarship without counting as  initial recruits.

Several years ago, rapper Snoop Lion and former NFL receiver Keyshawn Johnson coached 7-on-7 youth teams that toured.

One of the players was Don'Yeh Patterson of Carson, Calif.

Johnson called his friend, UH coach Norm Chow, to recommend Patterson, now a senior at Carson High. UH studied videos, spoke with people who coach and know Patterson, and then offered a scholarship.

Patterson and Saint Louis School receiver Devan Stubblefield are candidates to play as freshmen. Patterson will compete at X receiver; Stubblefield will compete at Z.
