  7. boolakanaka:

Good morning all. I was reviewing the times and marks of the most recent crop of Warriors at the San Diego pro day, and was actually a bit disappointed by some of the marks by our two more marquee players: John Hardy Tuilau and Chris Gant. Bench presses of 8 and 9 respectively. These are not just below-average, they are exceedingly low.

Now, one could say well that one of my personal favorite players of the recent NFL season, Tyrann Mathieu, only did 5 reps for the bench, but two things are distinctly different: one who had a helluva of portfolio, one that is marked by profound productivity, and two; he still was very quick, I think he ran a 4.43, at the combine after being out of football for over 18 months.

Perosnally, I don't think, a weak bench press is going to prohibit you from not getting a look, but it certainly does raise flags. Just as a benchmark, premier safeties like Earl Thomas and Eric Berry, had bench scores in the low 20s, combined with 40s under 4.5. Just curious on if they had some upper body injury or if there were mitigating circumstances....?

    7. Where are the 40 times and stuff available online? I see what you are saying about the low bench presses. If you are a player that already has the draftable resume, it means less. but if you aren't in the conversation, it gives the teams an excuse to not consider you at all.

  35. Old Diver:

A great bench number doesn't indicate a great player but it is one of the measures used by the NFL. A low bench is more a measure of a player who has not fully prepared for the test. That unpreparedness is what this test measures.

Good morning Tsaikos! Happy Aloha Friday!

    Howzit, Augie.

    Go Wahine!!
    Go BaseBows!

  42. gobows:

The biggest mistake young guys make when lifting weights is after every set they keep adding more weight resullting in declining reps. What builds strength is repetitions. High reps, high sets. You have to own the weight before moving up. In my lifting days i benched more than twice my body weight, but i didnt crack the 300 club till i was 30.

    Good morning everyone!

    Happy Birthday hawnstln !!!

  45. jimmy the lock:

Ahhh, Augie T. Coincidentally it's joke day Friday.

A Chinese guy went to Bank America to exchange Chinese money for US dollars. He seemed a tad angry and asked the teller, "Why it change, yestaday I get won hunat dolla and today I get ninedy dolla, why it change?"

    The teller says, "Fluctuations."

The Chinese guy madly yells, "Fluc you Americans too!"

  46. boolakanaka:

42--What surprises me, is that for guys like JHT and Chris is that they are obviously dynamic quick-twitch guys. That natural explosion makes for gaining strength a rather easy task. Now, I am not saying that every guy that can plow-through 35 reps, at 225 with be a great player. What is alarming is that if you know you are going to be tested on this, on why you have such a poor showing on a rather elementary movement. I am also saying that there is no reason why both of them should not be doing numbers in the mid teens, as they are both are naturally strong.

  47. jimmy the lock:

Well, at least they can bench more than they weigh.

    GO BB WAHINE!
    GO BASEBOWS!
    GO SAND WAHINE!
    GO WHOEVER I MISSED!

  48. Shoko:

Looked at the 2014 Spring Roster and noticed Allen Sampson's name. Thought he transferred.

    http://hawaiiathletics.com/roster.aspx?path=football&

Anyway, I also noticed that the UH athletic website has a different look where they are using action photos instead of head shots for some of the players.

  49. boolakanaka:

Oh, I do not want to come-off as being negative towards our guys--so, I want to say that Tavita's numbers, while not monster, are very very solid, and he most certainly he is going to get invited to a camp. He certainly could get a little quicker and stronger, and that would make him a very unique player with really tangible physical attributes to contribute.

  50. jeezy33:

    49. These pro day stats really don't matter much.... Scouts are going to go solely off game tape. Pro day numbers are just used to confirm what they see on tape. If someone performs better, the scouts will go double check the tape and pay more attention to see if they missed anything.

In the end, none of these guys on film will stand out. I agree that Woodard has the size and athleticism that will possibly get a camp invite or try out... But that's about it. Pro days aren't meant for guys to get drafted who don't stand on out film but can do well in drills.

  51. jacklegpreacher:

37 - thank you kind sir! I agree with everyone about Tavita, I think Sean gets an tryout at least even though his 40 time is slow. Chow's connections and he can vouch for our guys. Chris Gant looks taller than 5-11 on tv? I also think John Hardy and Clay get workouts. Masifilo didn't seem to play much wherever he was- but he's an athlete. maybe a tryout based off of his name(nfl relatives)?

  52. BigWave96744:

Howzit Augie, we go going, Me you and Hagi

  53. BigWave96744:

Darn spell checker.. Augie, we go grind

  54. BigWave96744:

FYI, last month Farrington HS Junior, Breiden Fehoko did 40 reps of 225 bench press. The kid is amazing

  55. bowwar:

    Howzit, Augie.

Any news on how Spring Practice will go without two assistant coaches...I feel for coach Chow, as this seems to undermine his efforts to win this year. I hope Chow finds some coaches who have a vested interest in living and staying in the islands.

  56. Boolakanaka:

50 agreed Jeezy. Tavita and maybe on the outside Cofer, will get FA contracts and invite to camp. For all the flash that JHT, has, at his size and apparent lack of upper body strength, safety does not seem likely for him in the NFL. Making a squad as nickel and/or special teams would be the only opinion, but watching some past film on him, and well, he does not have NFL level man-on skills, and just average speed for his position.

  57. jeezy33:

SS is a nice story. Bounced back this year. Not going to land on a NFL team. Can't make NFL throws...

  58. Ryan:

    Howzit, Augie.

  59. Inyoface:

Schroeder is definitely a pass first, stay in the pocket type of quarterback which should help him.

  63. ai-eee-soos:

Keeping up with the Klemms ...

Adrian Klemm's massive pay raise - he could be the highest paid O-line coach in CFB.

UCLA: Offensive line coach Adrian Klemm's massive raise has been approved by the UC

Board of Regents. He will earn $650,000 in 2014 and $750,000 in 2015; Klemm made

$340,000 in 2013. Overall, Klemm could earn up to $823,000 a year with bonuses.

  64. st. anthony trojan:

    ai--eee--soos

is he good coach or good recruiter or both ???

  65. Old School Dave:

I wonder if UCLA still gives its player those spensive $$$ boxing robes? At least they used to back in the 80s.

  66. ai-eee-soos:

    # 64. Klemm is an outstanding recruiter.

He must be an excellent coach, otherwise he wouldn't be getting this kine "double" money.

  67. jimmy the lock:

  77. izzy:

And now for something completely different:

    Yesterday's Coffee

  78. Lowtone123:

Clark Evans ran a 5.10, 40 time and John Hardy-Tuliau did 8 reps of 225?

  79. Lowtone123:

The Jets get Vick and get rid of Sanchez. Is that a win, or a push?

  80. ai-eee-soos:

    # 79. It's a win for the Jets, in terms of dollars.

I'm not a Sanchise fan, but he will be a decent backup for somebody. The "pressure"
is off, so he should be able to play "better".

  81. st. anthony trojan:

Sanchez is a good quarterback, but not sure
if ne pop warner teams will pick him up......lol
so many years n money wasted on him......

  82. gobows:
