Shhhh

There will be kind of a hush as the football recruiting as football recruiting enters the quiet period tomorrow.

For 46 days through today, FBS teams were allowed to assess a prospect's playing ability at his high school or place where he is competing. During that "evaluation period" coaches were not allowed off-campus, in-person contact with the player and his legal guardians.

This "quiet period," which runs through July 31, coaches are permitted to have in-person contact with a prospect and his guardians only on the coaches' campus. A prospect can visit a college campus at any time.

The UH coaches made use of the evaluation period, visiting every football-playing high school in the state. The coaches have identified two top tiers of prospects for a 2015 recruiting class that is viewed as rich and deep.

In the past month, scores of recruiters have entered the state, with Oklahoma and Vanderbilt now joining the mix.

Once again, Na Koa's Q-and-A event at Kauai Community College reportedly was entertaining and informative. Liz Kauai provides the photos:

    Go warriors!

  2. Boolakanaka:

Ekahi! Wow-Vandy, huh? Has there ever been a local boy play at Vandy-anyone? Oh, as to Ballmer paying in cash for Clippers, it's actually a smart move that saves 10-15 million in administrative fees.

  3. Stephen Tsai:

They're have been local baseball players who attended Vanderbilt. I can't recall Vanderbilt recruiting football.

  4. Boolakanaka:

ST, I think the closest we have is the late great Jesse Mahelona who played down the road at Tennessee.

  5. Stephen Tsai:

Speaking of "Tennessee," whatever happened to Arrested Development?

  6. Boolakanaka:

They did release an album in 2011, but they are mostly an overseas attraction (japan) and have had some health problems with its members, including a stroke and another losing their voice.

  7. LizKauai iPad:

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

  13. Stephen Tsai:

LizKauai offered deserved praise for Kauai Community College's culinary school.
Kapiolani's culinary school also draws raves.
It seems our islands are brimming with talented chefs.

  14. LizKauai iPad:

al - had choke stuff going on last night- including the Waimea Blue and White game. I think next year we gonna make em on a week night and not aloha Friday. But no complaints. Up close and personal for everyone and mo' fuud! Many folks stayed long aftah the coaches had to leave for the airport. Football FFFF for all!

  15. Stephen Tsai:

I still can't believe I wake up every morning with a view of the Koolau's.
I remember when I was living in Washington Heights and staring at ... New Jersey.
    I think I prefer the Koolau's.

  16. tommui:

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    ST - when

i was living on Mott Street in Chinatown and staring at another nondescript tenement building across the street.

Fortunately school was only two-three blocks away!

  17. Old School Dave:

Maybe the UH coaches can find another Jordan Dizon. No stone unturned.

  18. Stephen Tsai:

    Mott Street. That's a name I hadn't heard in a while.

  19. BigWave96744:

  20. Stephen Tsai:

I also used to like Waianae football games, with the ocean in the background. Is it still that way? Haven't been there in a long time.

  21. Inyoface:

Olomana mountain was right in front of my yard growing up in keolu. Now I see graffiti written walls in LA. How times have changed...

  22. Biggestuhfan:

Any news on a TE coach?

  23. Stephen Tsai:

I think UH needs to do more grass-roots events like last night's Kauai dinner.

  24. Warrior Dave:

Agree with ST that UH should do more grassroots events. As a fan, I feel so disconnected to Chow. He doesn't like these events if he's not getting paid so therefore he passes.

As a HC, you got to be accessible to fans, boosters and sponsor's. I will continue to be a football season ticketholder but games don't mean as much to me as it used to. Go Warriors!

  25. RB:

"There will be kind of a hush as the football recruiting as football recruiting enters the quiet period today." ST must have been up real early to write this. LOL

  26. SteveM:

    Good morning everyone!

    Thanks for the photos LizKauai!
,,,and fuud by tunalvr...too good. :-)

  27. Inyoface:

Any video on the Q and A?

  28. bowwar:

ST: Any more potential QB transfers on the horizon or are we standing pat with the hand of QBs on the roster?

  29. al:

growing up as a child...we'd look out the window and see that old playground of ours, the honolulu stadium.

  30. al:

years later living on telegraph ave...across the street was the dining room, a jack-in-the-box with its tacos tuesday,. 4 for a dollar.

...and 4 blocks to the rear was the national headquarters of the black panthers, er, social group. huey newton, bobby seale, et al.

  31. al:

the view from the kitchen is the equally majesty of the other side of the koolau.

ten years ago, the view from the living room was diamondhead in its entirety. now, i need to get some mango tree herbicide.

  32. el burro sabio:

UNLV OL Jefferson transferred to Arkansas. He can play without sitting out as a senior from a school with a low APR.

    Good Morning Gangeez! ;)

My morning wake up view used to be Kauahikamakaokalani, known more commonly as Crouching Lion. Now, it's Kaka'ako and Puowaena, front and back respectively.

  35. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    35!

  36. markazulu:

I hope Mr. Jay really does consider the Alabama 13th game. Mostly for my selfish reasons because I love watching UH play the big boys.

ad makes more than nc. so funny hearing so many naive people saying he should be an assistant coach here, same goes for ju too. those 2 assistants make more than all the hawaii assistants combined.

I got up so early I now realize that today is not June 1. Yikes.

  42. amadeus:

ST I remember staying at your parents place in Manhattan in 1970. We visited with your cousin Clyde Watanabe while we were in the army. You were just a little kid back then. Appreciated your parents hospitality.

  43. Stephen Tsai:

    Amadeus:
Hey, I remember you guys. That was a long time ago. Hope all is well.

I think the words are really great and you have mention well through your writing they look quite amazing.

  47. leron:

#45 former Kalani and Udub star Tamari Miyashiro is the one layer with Hawaii ties on a Team USA.

  48. Dan-O:

What do you get for the $150 VIP ticket???

  49. Shoko:

MWC Football Travel Cost ($150k West Division teams, $175k Mountain Division teams)
    2014 $650,000
    2013 $675,000
    2012 $650,000

BWC Travel Cost ($500 per person for visiting team).

Having hard time figuring how UH would make a $200,000 profit this past fiscal year instead of the 2 million deficit if they weren't saddled with travel subsidies.

Are they saying that 2.2 million accounted for travel expenses? And that 1.525 million was the amount paid to BW conference visiting teams?

  50. Shoko:

Congrats to Mathews for his promotion to full-time assistant. Now he closer to affording the high-cost living in Hawaii.

  51. dabowman:

#49, Was travel subsidies just for football or for all sports?

  52. Shoko:

Yep, Mountain West and Big West conferences charge travel subsidies to UH for all its sports.
