Two LBs contact Warriors

July 8th, 2014
By

Two linebackers who are seeking to transfer — Oregon's Tyrell Robinson and Nebraska's Jared Afalava — have contacted the Warriors.

tr

Robinson, who is 6-4 and 220 pounds, was a 4-star recruit in 2012. He played nine games as a true freshman for the Ducks in 2013. Last month, Robinson requested — and received — a release from his football scholarship. His twin brother — Tyree Robinson, a defensive back who redshirted in 2013 — will remain at Oregon.

ja

Afalava, who is 6-3 and 230 pounds, left Nebraska this past spring.

As a second-year freshman in 2013, Afalava played in four games, starting two.

He led Bingham High to two Utah 5-A state championships.

His father, Kesi Afalava, is a former UH defensive tackle.

delete this blog entry before it makes national headlines.

  17. Stephen Tsai:

    Pono:
It still was early, even for Pacific time.

  18. BigWave96744:

I wonder if Gib is also in talks with Tyree.
Out of High School he intended to play both Football and Basketball for the Ducks.
Heard SDSU may also be in the hunt for the San Diego Native.
They already got a Duck QB to transfer this summer

  19. tom-warriornation:

Link to buy UH-Colorado road game tickets ($65 each) to sit together with 80-100 Hawaii fans:

  20. whitey:

i guess it does make recruiting for the warriors much more interesting and i have no problems with looking at the brighter side. whether one, two, or none end up as warriors, it does show that the warriors are on the right track to improving their team and image nationwide. Go Warriors.

  21. Stephen Tsai:

Folks, Tom Kitaguchi, does an excellent job organizing trips.
He's worth contacting if you're interested in attending road games.

  22. hatakeman:

Need upper campus to ensure their transfers are processed expeditiously (if they choose Hawaii). BJ should be on top of this.

  23. Stephen Tsai:

I think I had a couple classes with Kesi Afalava at UH.

  24. Stephen Tsai:

Back in the day, we were at the Point After when the deejay announced there was a celebrity in the house. We all looked around. And then Lyndell Jones was introduced. Of all the players from that era, I'll always remember Jones standing out as a celebrity.

  25. Shoko:

Alava's H.S. video looks impressive. My eyes got real big seeing some of the jaw-dropping hits he made. Good grief!

  26. Shoko:

At the one-minute mark he hits the QB ripping off his helmut.

  27. boolakanaka:

ST--Lyndell had cornrows before there was cornrows....Kesi very solid red raider.

  28. NorthShoreFan:

    Guud Morning Tsaikos...bootiful day.

    Cheeehoo!...guud to see a Son of Hawaii return!...Welcome Tyrell & Jared..IMUA!

  29. kapakahi:

Can always use more LBs......now that going with the 3-4 defensive front.

  30. boolakanaka:

It seems like the LBs are fast becoming the strength of the defensive squad.....

  31. MattyBoy:

    ST,

You think the crop of QB'S that Hawaii has now will be ready to go this season?

  32. Andrew:

Say what you want about Norm, but he's been attracting a lot of quality looking transfers

  33. boya_jr:

Hope these guys become Warriors. Jared Afalava is a big hitter.

  34. jeezy33:

Pretty sure Afalava is at Snow College right now

  35. Kapaa Warrior:

They look like to possible starters if they do attend. Seems like a lot of transfers who have to sit out the 2014 season? Who got the list of names of guys that gotta sit out the '14 season out there? Curious to see the names? Mahalo !

  36. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Couple of quality players! Welcome - here's wishing we see both of you in Warrior unis ASAP!

Afalava - a hella ferocious player. Is Robinson being looked at strictly as an LB? He looks like he'd be a great TE/Receiver.

    Lets get 'em both!

  37. Old School Dave:

This sometimes happens when players go on missions for the LDS Church. In this case, church officials seem to be handling the player's possible transfer, which I find troubling (but, that's just me):

    http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/blogsutahsports/58158396-59/langi-utah-byu-tribune.html.csp

  38. boolakanaka:

37..I hold the same opinion Old School. I just read in a recent NYT's article that the church is very involved with all top caliber athletes, and in some instances, advising them to not do a mission work, but rather, stay focused on athletics....

  39. Lowtone123:

    Bring um in!

  40. Stephen Tsai:

If Afalava were to transfer here, I'm fairly certain he'd still have to redshirt.

  41. 808DucksFan:

Small correction - Tyrell Robinson may have indeed requested a release from his scholarship, but only after he was dismissed from the team for "violation of team rules".

  42. Shoko:

Afalava had minor issues too. He wasn't allowed to play in the Gator Bowl for violating team rules. If they can play, its all good and are more than welcome. After all, UH is the school of second chances.

  43. boolakanaka:

Oh, yesterday we were talking about interesting/unusual name of players...how's this one: JaWand Blue?

    http://www.miamiherald.com/2014/07/08/4224434/um-football-players-jawand-blue.html

  44. 808DucksFan:

@ Shoko, true that. Tyrell Robinson is a _great_ player and a great get if he comes to UH. College students sometimes do some silly things and I don't blame him for anything he may have done. For sure I was no angel in college. He's a college kid and hopefully he makes the most of his second chance.

  45. Stephen Tsai:

    Boola:
Whatever happened to the days of Cash Petty, Ben Gur and Junior Farm?

  46. boolakanaka:

ST--so funny you should mention that, cause I went to school and played football with a Halawa boy (well sole) whose name was Ben Gurr.

I also knew another family, Samoan as well, and the brothers were respectively: Zero, Arizona and Fong Fong.

    How you like them apples???lol

  47. Papakolei-n:

Hope we can get these guys! Afalava is a beast and maybe Chow can convince Robinson 2 become a TE? TE's in Chow's offense over the years have always put up numbers, only if we have a QB to get the ball to them(still holding on to hope with Taylor) and improvement from the OL!

  48. BigFan:

#37, that name Mark Cusick sure sounds familiar. I read that he played football at Utah so he might have played against the Warriors?

  49. tom-warriornation:

ST--thanks for the mention. It is hard enough organizing and getting the best tickets for our fans as close to the team as possible; and it's even harder when some fans ask if you are legit. While I did not play football, I was a 4 yr letter winner on the UH tennis team.

  50. maddog50:

First thing you notice in the Afalava film clip.....his base, foot movement and acceleration on the ball. This young man is going to play somewhere....Go Warriors!!!!! Off the subject someone mentioned Mama Mia Pizza on King. The owner was Dominic....ate there often and he even gave me and my buddy a running tab. We were good for the money just did not always have it when the hunger bell rang....great guy.

  51. tom-warriornation:

Don Weir: sounds good about SDSU. can you shoot me an email to: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com
I lost your email address. Someone mentioned a bunch of letter winners will be joining the San Jose St. tailgate this year; and doing something big this year.

  52. Stephen Tsai:

    Tom-warriornation:
Not many people know your background. But you're a regular guy who works hard and wants to help others share in the experience that is UH football.
I've sweated out organizing graduation parties. I can't imagine trying to organize a football outing for 100 or more people.
But that's what make UH fans special. You give what you can give, and you do the best you can. Collectively, that becomes magical.

  53. Stephen Tsai:

So, Germany and Brazil walked into a soccer stadium …

  54. Stephen Tsai:

It's one letter. Just one letter. But how come we can't spell it Brasil?

  55. 3-Prong:

whitey, I like your 50+ mentality. The day I landed the #62, I released a #25 that allowed me to keep fishing. Go Fo Broke!

  56. jimmy the lock:

    Was that Brasil's AYSO team?

  57. Boolakanaka:

    ST..It's called orthographic reform.

  58. Old School Dave:

Big Fan - #48: I think you're right in that Mark Cusick may have played for Utah, as his name does sound familiar. Church officials will deny any type of tampering or swaying of LDS players while on their missions, but I have my doubts (again, that's just me, though). On the other hand in Langi's case, maybe he realized that he's not a Pac-12 caliber running back (disappointing freshman season at Utah) and didn't want to play defense at Utah upon his return from his mission.

    Fingers crossed on Aaron Zwahlen.

  59. jimmy the lock:

How many Brasil soccer players does it take to change a light bulb?

No matter, they not going see the Cup anyway.

  60. NotNasti:

Name Game: I like Wave Ryder, Navy DB via KS-Kapalama.

  61. NotNasti:

Kalani has a fb player, a 2009 grad named Justice Quick.

  62. NotNasti:

    Kalani "had"

  63. 808WarriorFan:

Hope we can land both of 'em.....

  64. nutmegger:

Jack Lambert - that name sounds scary to me.
There is an architect in town that was a good friend of his from their days at Kent State together.

  65. st. anthony trojan:

    # 60 NotNasti...he should have playEd for Kealakehe High School...the "Wave Riders"

  66. Former UH Athlete:

Very interesting... If Clune can fit the pieces together, UH could have a really good defense in a year or two.

  67. Pu'uwai:

Year or two? We in trouble again.

    IMUA RAINBOW WARRIORS!!!

  68. jiminycricket:

I bought tickets that Tom Kitaguchi organized for the game at Washington several years ago. We had about 100 people in our section. It was around the 40-50 yard line way up high, but under cover. It was way, way better than the group tickets that UH organized for fans; those guys sat in the North end zone, in the hot sun, and the closest seats must have been at least 40 yards away from the end zone endline, plus our seats were way cheaper! Tom's has to get a minimum number of tickets for a group discount; then the school can sell a block of tickets for a discount and Tom can negotiate where the tickets will be, if it is not one of those schools that sell out every game. Way to go Tom!!!

  69. st. anthony trojan:

Yea...kinda shame on UHAD that a blogger can get better n cheaper seats then the staff there can..
Maybe like the Chicken n Buta...one is committed.. n one is only involved for 40 hours a week n just the government paycheck...

Wonder if sumone called tomorrow for few seats at the rice game the response would be "sorry but we not have yet...have to wait till we get closer to the game".

Would be same like the lack of merchandise at H Zone...cuz have to wait till the sport starts...??

Mahalo Tom 4 all you n Don do there in CA (n elsewhere)...for looking out for Tsaiko's n other concerned UH fans...sure is a load of ones mind when planning a trip to 'follow' the Warriors during the upcoming season...

  70. st. anthony trojan:

    Kolten did well today...IMUA 808...

  71. truegreen:

jiminy: yup I got tickets thru tom for the washington game too. I agree that the seats were better and cheaper than the UH sponsored tickets. some at the time doubted his intentions but just shows what fools they were. tom did an awesome job and I hope I can join in on another road trip again soon. mahalo tom!

  72. kapakahi:

    #34,

That would appear to be case.....

guess all the "night bird bloggers" decided to sleep instead of posting at 1am or 2am or 3am, etc.
