    Good morning Hawaii from Manila...

  3. st. anthony trojan:

If the same people are doing the work at the Sheriff... as were doing the Ching complex...the basketball season could be in jeopardy...just maybe ??

  4. whitey:

good morning mano, sa trojan, st, and tsaikos

  5. Stephen Tsai:

The MWC Mountain coaches are going to the interview rooms in about 15 minutes.

  6. PONO:

Wow UH is lagging way behind in the points. Votes between 5th and 6th is a lot.

  7. d1shima:

    Great Morning All!

    The sky's the limit!

Maybe the Blog Host can look to complete his retirement by finding odds on UH winning the Conference Championship this season?

  8. Inyoface:

Hawaii has a lot to prove.

  9. haka:

Ha! What does the media know! Well, excluding the blog host.
Hawaii will make the second greatest turnaround in school history.
It's going to be an exciting season and even the present skeptics will jump on the wagon.
Although, a few of them should stay in tow to eat some dust for a while. hehehe

    Go Warriors!!!!

  10. Old School Dave:

Right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing at UH regarding the scheduling of renovations in the SSC and displacing the football team's training meal during fall camp. Seems like one thing after another up there.

  11. tommui:

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

  12. Pu'uwai:

    Aloha kakahiaka.

First, the checks were late...then, no where to sleep...now, no place to eat. What's next???

    IMUA RAINBOW WARRIORS!!!

  13. hossana:

Keep The Faith Because the Rainbow Warriors will not only upset UW in their first game but will run the table and create controversy similar to what happened within the confines of the ESPN war room in '07. Sugar Bowl will be our redemption. Sugar Bowl because the merchants loved us as Hawaii fans were the biggest spenders ever and still is not only the biggest spenders but the nicest fans anywhere and are craving to have us return for a BCS Bowl Championship game. Aw, man.....sugar is sweetness.......let's not spoil it.......CHEERS!!!!

  14. haka:

    "We're relentlessly positive"

The team has it right. It is what it is right now. No time to be distracted.
Nothing else to focus on except what is in their control.
Us against the world attitude. Move the mountain. Just do it.

  15. 3-Prong:

Good Morning Fellow Rainbow Warrior Fans!

Post the preseason rankings in the lockerroom. Let's Go Bows!

  16. jeezy33:

Might be one of the worst media predictions I've seen in a while...

Utah St. is clearly better than Boise St. They have by far the best QB in the league and their defense is pretty damn good. Kyler Fackrell is probably the best defensive player in the MWC.

The West is pretty weak but I don't see where Fresno stays #1 considering they lose Derek Carr, Davonte Adams, and Isaiah Burse. Wasn't impressed with their defense.

I don't want to be overly optimistic but San Jose St. will be terrible without Fales and UNLV has a lot to replace too. Willing to say Hawaii will beat both of those teams and finish 4th in the West. Depth obviously the key factor if Iosefa can stay healthy. Drop off after him is huge.

  17. Kapaa Warrior:

I agree with a lot of the posters here that the Rainbow Warriors have much to prove this year! With that said the media only has to go on the record UH posted last year so it may be fair somewhat? But ..... these Rainbow Warriors will look forward to this challenge! IMUA Rainbow Warriors! IMUA !

  18. innocent observer:

what is the difference between 6th and last in a 6 team division? call a spade a spade, no matter how much you sugar coat it, last is last. us received the lowest number of points in the whole conference - such an embarrassment. so likely if considering the 12 team conference, uh is still last, not 12th.

  19. T0fuzuke:

Love the positive vibes this morning! I too believe anything can happen no where to go but up! Us against the world, wouldn't want it any other way! Joey and Beau, represent the 808, be humble, but let them know, watch out we coming!!!!

  20. haka:

    To the Warriors I say...

Listen not to the rumblings from afar.
Set upon deaf ears the whispers behind your back.
Contain your emotions and cast away your fears.
For it is in your heart that your pride swells.
It is in your soul that you feel the power.
You are your destiny to be fulfilled.

  21. jeezy33:

    17. I see no fault in putting Hawaii in last... But didn't Utah St. win their division with a back up QB? And didn't Boise lose their starting QB and top pass rusher? So I see no logic in how Boise loses their HC and is rated above Utah St. that brings back the best QB in the league.

  22. Wes'side Warrior:

    Morning, Gang!

Only way to go is up! Just no give up! Can!

  23. Wes'side Warrior:

    Oh shucks...

    Have a great day, everyone!

  24. oldtimer808:

Good morning does it really matter where we fall in the media poll. Polls are meant for coffee room talk especially at the beginning of the season. Why should anyone be embarrassed for the media predicting Hawaii last. All the proof will be at the end of the season. I have a gut feeling that this will be a turn around season. I have no idea how many wins this team will achieve but I wish our team well with limited number of injuries and our student/athletes continue to do well in the classroom and represent the University, the State and their family and fans with class and dignity.

  25. hatakeman:

It's just a poll and the Warriors are coming off a 1-11 season. But just as a refresher, the Warriors were close in most MWC games except for two. Last season, Warrior's close losses were: losses to Fresno St 42-37, San Diego St. 28-21 (OT), San Jose St 37-27, UNLV 39-37, Wyoming 59-56. Blow outs losses were: Utah St. 47-10 and Nevada 31-9. Fresno St doesn't have Derek Carr and San Jose St doesn't have David Fales. Behind Joey Iosefa and a senior offensive line, Warriors will have a run at all their MWC games except for Utah St whom I think will win the Mountain Division.

  26. jeezy33:

    25. Senior offensive line?? Think you're off there.

  27. Ipu Man:

Best to Joey and Beau. Beware of offers you can't refuse...

  28. NorthShoreFan:

    Guud Morning Tsaikos...bootiful day.

every team sit in first place now....time to stay there Warriors!

    scary item in the news...http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/20140722_China_meat_scandal_hits_Starbucks_Burger_King.html?id=268147972

  29. Seawalker:

Wow, how low can you go? No way. Chow, this is your year, man. If you can't do it, step aside. We need some excitement. We need sports to read, not another reason why we lost. U.H. athletics is everything in Hawaii. 2007 was sweet. 2014 can be even sweeter.

  30. Former UH Athlete:

Not surprising with UH's last ace vote. Pretty fair considering the W/L record the past couple years. I will say that UNLV is too high. They have to replace QB Herring, who did a good job running their offense and they lost a few key returnees because of the APR ban that was later removed...

  31. Former UH Athlete:

28... Not to mention the stone fruit (peaches, nectarines, etc) recall by a major producer... Affecting Sam's club, Costco and many other stores.

  32. Former UH Athlete:

Jeezy... I totally can see a decline in Boise over the next few years. The offensive talent has pulled back after Moore/Young/Pettis/Johnson group finished up. Peterson took them as far as they could go (like JJ here at UH).

  33. Andrew:

I'm still shocked at how quickly Utah state has risen in terms of conference standing. I mean seems like only a few years ago when they were a cellar dweller in the WAC and now they're considered one of the top teams and one of the favorites in the MWC. It's easy to see though that their rise has been correlated with their Universities commitment to spending on its football program.

  34. Old School Dave:

Beau and Joey are two excellent reps for UH Football. Good guys, too.

  35. Old School Dave:

Andrew - 33: Good points about USU. It all comes down to the university's commitment to football. They got tired of being an afterthought to Utah and BYU and got down to work in order to raise funds to upgrade their facilities. Receiving a gift to fund their 20,000 sq foot Strength Center really helped greatly. With that, the quality of their athletes has improved greatly over the last 4-5 years, too. USU used to be a graveyard for coaches, but its last coach is now at Wisconsin, and current coach Matt Wells is an up and coming one who will garner interest from BCS schools with another successful season.

  36. Andrew:

    35.

yeah its crazy how quickly they turned that program around. Before Utah state used to be a circle on the schedule for a sure lop sided win. Now, it's one of the more tougher games on the schedule.

  37. jalansky:

What the team will need is a couple more critical defensive stops on third down and a couple more third down conversions per game to lift their mood from a "Oh oh, here we go again" frame of mind to "we're going to win this" mentality. Is this possible? Absolutely! Go Bows!

  38. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Good Morning Gangeez! ;)

There are pre-season polls and final win loss records. Only one matters!

    Lookin' good, Joey and Beau!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  39. jmor56:

Trying to think when was the last time UH was picked last in its conference twice in a row

  40. nutmegger:

The poll may cause Washington to come to town unsuspecting, except for that new coach of theirs. Their players may be looking forward to a cake walk until that sunburn under their pads gets smacked a few times.

  41. Rodney:

Maybe team can use St. Louis
    Club house for training table!
    Lol!!

  42. Andrew:

    40.

Coach Peterson is not gonna allow his players to overlook any opponent even if its Hawaii. He's been here before many times and knows that teams often have trouble here

  43. Bryson:

I hope Chow loosens the reigns and lets Wynn call the plays...what we need is someone with imagination someone who will keep defenses honest and off balance...The old school mentality of we're gonna run it down your throats try and stop us is an after thought...

  44. Inyoface:

It seems the teams that beat Hawaii in 2011 have had more faith in themselves and turned the program around.

  45. Rodney:

Could team use a near by public school
    cafeteria for free !

  46. Old School Dave:

Campus Center or Gateway might be an option. Red tape may also be an obstacle, knowing how UH works.

  47. Papakolei-n:

Sometimes it is good to be underrated! When everybody expects you to lose, you play football way harder then the other team that is expected to win! The Hawaii Warriors will surprise a lot of teams this year, they will play way harder then most teams because they have nothing to lose! Imua Warriors

  48. Bryson:

Maybe UH would be able to get a donation of some sort from a Party Rental company for tents, tables and chairs...

  49. Maddog50:

Let's just play and see what's what 5-7 wins is what I see

  50. Andrew:

    43.

From the middle to the end of last season Wynn was already pretty much calling the plays.

  51. Warrior Dave:

When Peterson was elevator to HC, Boise didn't miss a beat. I'd so they even became better. Can't wait to see how he does at Washington. The players have to accept playing his way. Not sure how many assistants left with him but I would be surprised if they continued their upward rise.

  52. Warrior Dave:

Going into Chow's 3rd hsar, he has his players in the program so no excuses as expectations are higher than 3 wins this year. Still troubles me that I do not personally see any upgrades in the oline. That's going to be key this year. The fan base will continue to shrink and the athletic dept. can't survive the loss in revenue.

  53. Andrew:

    51.

I hope they succeed as well. Not against UH of course, but I hope to see them contending for the PAC 12 title. Of course being in the North with Oregon and Stanford will be tough, but even contending would be a step forward for them.

  54. Whats up:

Hawaii will not finish dead last in the West this season, the Warriors should beat UNLV and SJSU. Im hoping they run the table in the West but SDSU might be to much for the Warriors.

  55. (Jesse)James:

    Good morning Tsaikos!!!

It is what it is....Use it as an incentive...Nowhere else to go but up!!!

  56. hatakeman:

My starting offensive line is comprised of: LT-Ben Clarke, Jr; LG-Sean Shigematsu, Sr; C-Kody Afusia, Sr; RG-David Lefotu, Sr; RT-Frank Lloyd Jr, Sr.

  57. hatakeman:

Warriors play 13 games this season with the addition of the away Rice game.

  58. Stephen Tsai:

Utah State's Chuckie Keeton and Zach Vigil said the Aggies' fortunes turned following that comeback victory over Hawaii in 2011.

  59. Stephen Tsai:

From what I understand, it appears the leaders are:
    LT—Clarke
    LG—Tupai/Allen
    C—Afusia
    RG—Lefotu
    RT—Wa‘a/Loyd
Shigematsu has been hampered by injuries.

  60. Old School Dave:

Hopefully young gun players such as Dejon Allen, and John Wa'a will earn some valuable playing time on the O-Line this season.

  61. jeezy33:

    56. Not happening... 2 FR will most likely start

  62. Andrew:

    58.

That was a very painful game to watch.

  63. jeezy33:

    62. Ironic thing is we shut Keeton down completely. Might have been his worst game ever in his career. Than Kennedy came in and stretched our D deep. Weird game to witness.

  64. jmor56:

If Chow does not have a winning season he should be let go. Even a .500 record is unacceptable after 3 years.

Its hard to be optimistic when there is no proven quarterback in place and a defense in transition.

  65. SteveM:

    Good morning everyone!

Well, the good news is that we do not have to worry about living up to media hype. The better news is we are well positioned to pull off many upsets!

  66. Andrew:

    64.

I disagree. If they end with a .500 record I think that he should get another season. (Although with 13 games its impossible to end with a .500 record unless they go 7-6 and lose the bowl game). Especially if they are close in the other games that they lose, that would be a big step forward for the team. I know a being around .500 is nothing to be proud of but considering where the team has been the last 4 years that would be something to be optimistic about.

  67. jimmy the lock:

Warriors could go around the block and still end up in last.

Hard to prove a point when others have a point to prove.

Looks like the Rainbow Warriors are the cakewalk.

Who wants it more? Who will make the least mistakes? Who's better prepared? Who has the luck? Who will live up to the hype?

    Talk about a Ramblin' man...

  68. leron:

I'm thinking the addition of Kevin Clune may be one of the most important pickups this year. Besides, the defense sent be worse than it was last year.

  69. jimmy the lock:

Finding an alternate training table location should be a non-issue.

  70. haka:

Not to sound pious, but it may not be a bad idea to seek divine intervention. :p

Sometimes, to be optimistic, you must push logic aside and go with your heart and faith. Fear not to be proven wrong by future events, rather, aspire to the greatness of hope.

  71. Mikey:

Too bad we're not playing New Mex & AF more to our caliber
But no matter we'll upset everyone & National TV will pick up final
game against Fresno St for MW Championship
We can Dream On till Oct 11th can't we?
    Go Warriors!

  72. Shoko:

Seems to be less of a disparity in votes and a more leveled-playing field compared to last year where Fresno and Boise had the majority of first-place votes. That tends to work in favor of programs that are struggling and ranked at the bottom.

    2014-2015 preseason

    West Division

    1. Fresno State (39 first-place votes) — 243 points

    2. San Diego State (1) — 181

    3. San Jose State (1) 172

    4. Nevada — 135

    5. UNLV — 71

    6. Hawaii — 59

    Mountain Division

    1. Boise State (40) — 245

    2. Utah State (1) — 204

    3. Air Force — 143

    4. Wyoming — 116

    5. Colorado State — 90

    6. New Mexico — 63

  73. Shoko:

Oops, the above is last year's preseason conference polls.

  74. Mikey:

Clune is going to surprise us
Where do you think he comes from
He's going to bring all that and more
All the coaches are going to remember
Joey and Beau when they come to Aloha
They're going tear them all apart
Have fun in Vegas Joey & Beau
And bring back some mola we could use the cash at UH

  75. Mikey:

    Off the track from FB
But if Cal Poly coach Joe Callero got a raise to $227K after winning
Big West Title our coach Gib is WAY over paid by $150K
Oh wait Gib is bring the Big West Title this year and to NCAA
By the way guess we won't see the coach at any autograph sessions since he's not getting bonus

  76. Stephen Tsai:

USU linebacker Zach Vigil said Clune taught him everything he knows about being a linebacker.

  77. Mikey:

    Lunch time got some soba/sushi

  78. Shoko:

Gib's initial salary contract was based on an average of what other head coaches in the WAC were getting paid. Big West average salary was probably a lot lower than the WAC.

Would be strange to reduce his salary to reflect Big West coaching salaries because of a move to the conference.

  79. Old School Dave:

Improved play of the front seven will be the key in the new 3-4, IMHO, under new DC Kevin Clune and LBs coach Kurt Gouveia.

  80. Inyoface:

Chow should turn off the music during practice and concentrate on football plays. Seems to be a distraction and maybe some players and coaches don't like the music that is being played.

  81. bpiccolo:

You know your football program is big trouble when the fans say being 500 is something to be optimistic about and others we wishing we could play inferior teams. There was a time when you were worried about keeping your job if the team went 500 and we wanted to play the big boys. Music has nothing to do with winning. What is a distraction to some is motivation to others.
"Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all time thing. You don't win once in a while, you don't do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing." We need a winning habit. Period.

  82. jmor56:

    #81

"Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all time thing. You don't win once in a while, you don't do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time."

"You know your football program is big trouble when the fans say being 500 is something to be optimistic about and others were wishing we could play inferior teams. There was a time when you were worried about keeping your job if the team went 500 and we wanted to play the big boys."

    I couldn't agree more.

  83. Andrew:

    81 & 82

I think you gotta more so look at the state of the program and realize this is a rebuilding process. If around 500 is what they get, that's a big improvement from the past two years. Recruiting has also seemed to been improving as well. Not every new coach staff is going to have instant winning seasons like JJ had. I don't think people remember how subpar the talent on team was after the 2010 season. It was going to take time for Chow to bring in the talent they need to rebuild the program.

  84. gobows:

78 true. but lowering his salary because he sucks makes sense.

  85. nutmegger:

If your kid got an F in math the previous two semesters before, and you encourage him/her to improve in the coming semester. What happens if the kid gets a C? Are you proud of the effort? Apparently bpiccolo and jmor56 will be disappointed and tell them getting an A is a habit.

I don't think anyone will be satisfied by winning 6 or 7, but I do think many of us will be proud that improvements are being made.

  86. SteveM:

Last I looked, just winning 6 games (minimum 50%) for a mainland team makes them bowl eligible. Hawaii need 1 more in a 13 game season, but shooting for 50% seems to be the national norm outside the SEC...

  87. jimmy the lock:

50% date rate on match.com is pretty good.

  88. st. anthony trojan:

    # ha ha ha # 87...jimmy the lock...date dot com in manila..is more like 100% rate...

  89. AllG:

Wouldn't mind seeing all 3 of the Freshmen start. Tupai, Allen, and Wa'a. Lefotu needs to step his game up big time. If he plays like he did last year would way much rather start one of the young guns. Shigematsu is done and Loyd is very average not a lot of upside or downside with him. Will be interesting to see how Clarke handles the move to LT. He has the skills I just hope he hit the weight room hard this summer. He could use to put on another 15 lbs of muscle.

  90. jmor56:

    #85

    1. No parent should allow an F effort 2 semesters in a row.

    2. No parent should be proud of a C effort. If a homeless child can be a straight A student why cant yours?

    3. You are right I do tell my child getting an A is an expectation.

There is nothing wrong with trying to be the best you can be and nothing wrong with having that type of expectation in anything you do.

I hope I'm wrong and UH does well as it would be a pleasant surprise. We have good players but I have no confidence in our head coach

  91. Andrew:

    2.

#2. I think effort put forth is not always reflected by the grade

  92. Andrew:

An "A" effort can still result in a C and vice versa.

  93. Darren:

On D, key factor will be how fast the guys can adapt to Coach Klune's new system. As brilliant as Coach Aranda was with his 3" thick playbook, I still remember our guys in the first game looking at the sideline as USC snapped the ball...over and over again.

  94. Darren:

On offense, hope we can set the starting o-line in camp...and stick with it. The musical chair rotation last season seemed to be getting kinda out of hand.

  95. Darren:

Getting our starting QB to run with the first unit as early as possible is an obvious need. After seeing what Coach Chow and Coach Wynn did with Sean Schroeder last year...who'd have thought it after 2012. Just need one of our guys to step up and become a productive QB. Don't need to be a world beater (although that would be a pleasant surprise), but need to at least be a step or two above seviceable for us to have a successful season.

  96. Ipu Man:

Here's an out of the box idea: Play without a quarterback.
Whoever is in there, will be like an extra running back. Who will
throw the ball? Maybe an end around and let him heave it.

  97. oneseason:

The last time UH took on UW, the Warriors had just easily beaten Colorado with Moniz in his prime, it ended in a 32-40 loss. I am looking forward to this first game to showcase how far we have come in 3 years.

  98. blaxican3120:

Seriously what is the deal with everyone thinking SS had some miracle turn around season?!?!? The only pass he could complete was in the 4th qt and was a horrible hailmary that the WR made a miraculous catch on.

  99. nutmegger:

    90 jmor56

fyi my kid was valedictorian in high school, graduated summa cum laude from college and was in the top 5 in her law school class. Different parenting techniques I guess.

The only thing I expected was her to work hard and do her best. I told her I would love her the same whether she got an A or F.

  100. markazulu:

    @98
SS had a great season and during the final stretch he played lights out football. Sean Schroeder was phenomenal especially when iosefa was there in the backfield with him.

  101. whack:

At least 31 last place votes. who was the 2 guys that picked hawaii to finish 5th? or did ST pick em to finish 4th?

  102. blaxican3120:

100 he played lights out against Wyoming and army who both lost their HC be cuz both teams where horrible!

  103. haka:

    T he coaches
    E very player
    A ll the fans
    M ake it happen!

  104. jmor56:

    99

I think you are missing the point I am trying to make and that's ok. I respect your opinion and yes I will love my daughter even if she brings home a C lol

BTW great parenting on your part as I am sure you are a big part of your child's success in academics.

  105. whitey:

Go Warriors. ST must be having fun "interviewing".
